The Sacred Wink: A Call for Queer Jews to Heal the World with Liberal Magic
Back in my OKCupid days, this was the tagline on my profile: “The only gay Jewish boy homeschooled by lesbians in North Carolina.” It was a silly, joking acknowledgment of my unique background, intended to start conversation – which it did. Matches would inquire with curiosity (and varying levels of tact) about the components of the tagline that intrigued them – about how I made friends, how I felt about my queer family, how I integrated my gay and Jewish identities, what I would have changed about my childhood if I could have. I loved starting conversations with potential suitors in this way because it usually allowed us to skip the small talk about hobbies and travel and get to the more interesting stuff more quickly.
